XKB error

ok getting some crazy error when i start X.

must be because of the changes i made, right? but it didn't start right away.

Error activating XKB configuration.

It can happen under various circumstances:

- a bug in libxklavier library

- a bug in X server (xkbcomp, xmodmap utilities)

- X server with incompatible libxkbfile implementation

Dvorak Left Handed

so i've decided to try to use this blog as a record of things i'm doing in linux. really just as an archive for myself, so that when i want to know what i did wrong... maybe i can trace my steps back.

i'm trying to learn to type with one hand using the Dvorak Left Handed layout.

the most annoying thing so far is trying to hit the Enter key. it's just too far away. so i am trying to get my 0x81 key to work as the Enter key. 0x81, on a japanese keyboard, is juuust to the right of the spacebar. (i use the other two japanese keys, 0x83 and 0xd0 as workspace shortcuts!)

but how do i do it? i read about editing the xkb directory... so i know how to switch my X key with my Y key... i even know how you change my xX key into a xY key (woo hoo) but what about Return?

figured it out! i was doing it right except not capitalizing Return!
this is the XKB code that makes the Return key function as a return key

   key <RTRN> { [    Return, Return  ]     };

so if you change that to

   key <RTRN> { [    e, E  ]     };

you will end up with a console that looks like this

which might be the beginning of an awesome prank.... do you know your friend's root password? :)

or even better, you could make the Return key functionless unless you hold Shift.

Got it!

Ok here is the code.

key <XFER> { [ Return ] };

XFER is the key with the red arrow pointing to it. There are 3 more special keys, here is a list of them

NFER
XFER
HKTG
PRSC

I assigned each one to a different letter: a,b,c,d
then i killed X and came back, pulled up the console and went to town. My special button was throwing down 'b' like there was no tommorow! 'b' for... BINGO! XFER it is!
